Small Farms, Large Transaction Costs: Haiti’s Missing Sugar

نویسندگان

چکیده

In the eighteenth century, Haiti was world’s leading sugar producer, but when cane surged in Caribbean early twentieth produced none. Instead, land sat idle while workers emigrated to work on plantations. I examine hypothesis that historical property rights institutions created high transaction costs for converting production. collect new data land-use from 1928–1950 and a proxy costs. The evidence suggests impeded market responding boom.

Homogenization and Asymptotics for Small Transaction Costs

We consider the classical Merton problem of lifetime consumption-portfolio optimization problem with small proportional transaction costs. The first order term in the asymptotic expansion is explicitly calculated through a singular ergodic control problem which can be solved in closed form in the one-dimensional case. Unlike the existing literature, we consider a general utility function and ge...

Hedging Large Risks Reduces the Transaction Costs

As soon as one accepts to abandon the zero-risk paradigm of Black-Scholes, very interesting issues concerning risk control arise because diierent deenitions of the risk become unequivalent. Optimal hedges then depend on the quantity one wishes to minimize. We show that a deenition of the risk more sensitive to the extreme events generically leads to a decrease both of the probability of extreme...

Hedging Under an Expected Loss Constraint with Small Transaction Costs

We consider the problem of option hedging in a market with proportional transaction costs. Since super-replication is very costly in such markets, we replace perfect hedging with an expected loss constraint. Asymptotic analysis for small transaction costs is used to obtain a tractable model. A general expansion theory is developed using the dynamic programming approach. Explicit formulae are ob...
